Weezie is wrapping up the summer with a trip to the Cashiers Designer Showhouse. Tucked in the North Carolina mountains, the beautiful home is the perfect place for some extra cozy #toweltime. We were honored to be included in the showhouse by Elly Poston, Richmond-based interior designer and former Southern Living editor. Elly designed two enviable spaces, a mudroom and laundry room, that have us dreaming of long weekends spent in the mountains.
Elly, tell us a little bit about yourself and Elly Poston Interiors!
Elly Poston Interiors is a boutique interior design firm based in Richmond, VA with current projects on both coasts.
Three days after graduating from Wofford College, I moved to New York City where I was lucky enough to work with and learn from two of the very best Southern-born design stars - Meg Braff and Ashley Whittaker. However, it was not until I was living in Birmingham, AL [c. 2014] that I decided to take the plunge and start EPI. I was constantly traveling around the South and always inspired by so many talents while working as the decorating editor at Southern Living. When a former client-turned-friend called to say they were relocating from Locust Valley, NY to Charleston, SC [my hometown] I eagerly said yes and the rest is history!
We’re so excited to be a small part of your gorgeous mudroom/laundry room in the Cashiers Designer Showhouse! What can you tell us about the inspiration behind your swoon-worthy space?
You are too kind! Weezie Towels are a favorite detail in our projects and we always welcome the opportunity to collaborate with you! Cashiers, NC is such a magical section of the world and we wanted our high-functioning spaces to be both practical and beautiful.
While some decorators gravitate toward blue, I am always going green. The mossy tones paired with the rich saffrons [that I currently cannot get enough of!] are the perfect nod to the seasonal changes here in the western North Carolina mountains. Michael S. Smith’s iconic Indian Flower is one of my all-time favorite prints, and I had the opportunity to use a colorway that I had not previously been able to. To play off the simplicity of the home’s shiplap walls in the mudroom, we wanted the laundry room to feel extra special. Plus - a warm pattern like this is even better for hiding sins from dogs, laundry, and container gardening … perhaps it is all of this working from home along with having pets and a 3-month-old myself, but I am always trying to keep it beautiful AND easy!
How did you land on our Sand piping color and fan-favorite Perry embroidery style? Any tips for when to stick with a neutral, vs. a bolder pop of color like blue or green?
The sand detail is a perfect and sophisticated neutral. As a color lover, I usually say more is more; however, I think for a second home [as I envisioned this being] it makes life easy to pick linens that can go in any [and all] of the bathrooms! Why overcomplicate things? And ironically, these linens would have worked beautifully in all four of the showhouse’s bathrooms!
We are all excited that the showhouse has gone virtual, as it means we can tour ourselves! For anyone who hasn’t experienced a showhouse IRL, what can we expect?
What a crazy thing, but we are actually thrilled that so many of our friends will now be able to join us from the comfort of their own homes. The silver lining is that in this Covid-19 format, you can purchase a ticket and invite friends over to capture [and rewind] all of the details that are easy to miss when quickly walking through. Beyond what is included in this space - what are 3 other go-to sources/items you often use in bathroom spaces?
We have actually been discussing this quite a bit recently as we prepare to begin a renovation of a groovy 1970’s A-frame in Cashiers for my Charleston-based clients.
We have 5 bathrooms to tackle, and to stay sane & within budget, we are going to keep the bathroom formula quite simple. The plan is to use a mix of pre-fab vanities, interesting floor tiles, inexpensive subway tiles [and as handmade looking as possible], and mix up the hardware [and their finishes] for each space.
One of my favorite bathroom tricks is doing custom shades on stocked sconces … oh and hunting for the perfect vintage mirror in lieu of a medicine cabinet or a catalog purchase!
