A towel's GSM, or grams per square meter, is a measurement of its weight that typically ranges from 300 to 900. The GSM in towels is determined by the density of the fibers woven together, meaning higher GSM towels weigh more and have more densely woven fibers than lower GSM towels.

What does that mean in terms of day-to-day use, and how does it affect the quality of your towels? Click one of the sections below to learn more.

What Does Low GSM Mean for Towels?

Low GSM towels range between 300 and 400, and several characteristics will stand out as you use them.

Feel

Towels with lower GSM tend to be lighter and thinner. They feel more delicate and, in some cases, smoother against the skin, making them perfect if you prefer a light and soft towel.

Absorbency

Lower-GSM towels are not as absorbent as their higher-GSM counterparts. They’re perfect for quick drying and for situations where you don’t need a lot of absorption

Dry time

Because they’re so lightweight, low-GSM towels dry faster than high-GSM towels. This can be an advantage if you’re concerned about convenience or energy efficiency (lower-GSM towels take less time in the dryer).

What Does High GSM Mean for Towels?

On the other end of the spectrum, towels with a high GSM, usually ranging somewhere between 600 and 900, offer a different day-to-day experience.

Feel

High-GSM towels are heavier, thicker, and more plush. They feel a lot more luxurious and substantial, like something you’d expect to find at a spa or an upscale hotel. The added weight makes high-GSM towels extra comfortable to use and wrap up in.

Absorbency

The best thing about high-GSM towels might be their exceptional absorbency. They can soak up large amounts of moisture quickly, which makes them perfect for drying off after a bath or shower.

Dry time

While they excel in absorbency, high-GSM towels take longer to dry due to their denser weave and increased thickness, so be sure to keep this in mind when it comes to laundry and storage. Allow for plenty of airflow when you hang them up between uses or store them after washing.

It’s worth noting that we do recommend drying Weezie towels on low, or even air-drying them if you can. While this takes longer, it keeps your towels feeling soft and luxurious for much longer!

What GSM is Best for Towels?

There’s no simple answer to this question because GSM primarily indicates the weight of a towel, not its quality. Take a moment to consider if you prefer a thin and light towel or a thicker, plush, absorbent one. Knowing what you want out of your towel, how much time you want to allot for drying, and how much room you have for storage will help you make the right decision.
