Winter days have us craving something a little moodier. Enter, a chic bathroom designed by Charlotte-based Cheryl Luckett. We chatted with the designer about her career and the inspiration behind this glam powder bath. Keep reading for all of the details!
Tell us about your journey to interior design.
I started my career as a registered dietician working in corporate food service management. After I purchased a home, I got very into nesting, and I found myself searching for a professional path that allowed more creativity. I started a blog on January 1, 2012, and Dwell by Cheryl blossomed from there. Going way back, though, my room was my haven when I was growing up, and in college I had the dorm room they toured prospective students through.
Your style in a few words:
Classic, colorful, cultured, cozy.
Your forever inspo:
I come from a family of sewers, and my earliest memories are designing dresses for church. As a result, I’m inherently drawn to textiles and I always begin there. Fabric is my playground and a throughline in my work. Since I’m based in North Carolina, where so much production happens, I love hunting and gathering through discards and overruns.
You recently completed a fab powder bath for your #projectlakefrontlkn project and included some special Weezie pieces. Can you give us a glimpse into the process of bringing this beautiful space together?
We’ve been working with this client for a while—this powder room is in their primary residence, and we’re now working on their secondary residence. They’re entertainers, and we knew it would be seen and used by a lot of guests. They wanted something moody and dramatic, so dark wallpaper was part of the early discussion. It’s a departure from the rest of their home, which is traditional and classic, but we knew it was the perfect place to cut loose and have fun.
The design brief:
The wallpaper leans a bit art deco, and to maintain the dressy drama, black trim and “guest” embroidery was the ideal accent on our Weezie pieces. I’m a Southern girl, so I love a monogram, and it speaks to the hospitality that’s important to this family.

What are you reading?
I’m loving Design Remix by Corey Damen Jenkins, and I can’t wait for Lauren Liess’s new book. When I’m stuck, I flip through Suzanne Kasler’s books more than any others — her spaces are inviting, elevated and super classic.
Who are you following?
I am and will forever be a huge Sarah Richardson fan — she’s my design idol and I love her. And as I mentioned, I love Suzanne Kasler’s work, which is so serene, buttoned-up and livable...all of the things.
What’s next?
I may have some exciting project collaborations in the works for spring, and I’m working on a second home for the same clients we did this powder room for. It’s a new build in the North Carolina mountains — I love the mountains and to do a project there is a real treat.
Recent interiors splurge:
In the South, between the heat and the mosquitos you’re often forced back indoors when you try to spend time outside, so during quarantine I ordered a motorized retractable screen for a small section of my porch. Now I can sit outside but not be in the elements. From coffee in the morning to wine in the evening while I’m scrolling through Instagram, the ability to press remote and lift a screen is just heaven.
Recent interiors steal:
I just found a vintage upholstered French bench with great details in Carolina Consignment in Simpsonville for a bay window in a client’s primary bedroom.
